UNetbootin allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for Ubuntu, Fedora, and other Linux distributions without burning a CD. It runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. UNetbootin for Mac can create a bootable Live USB drive. It loads distributions either by downloading a ISO (CD image) files for you, or by using an ISO file you've already downloaded. Select an ISO file or a distribution to download, select a target drive (USB Drive or Hard Disk), then reboot once done.
If you want to try out a Linux distribution then you could just download and boot from the appropriate LiveCD - but that's not always convenient. You'll need to locate the image first, for instance, then you'll have to find a spare disc to hold it. Once that's burned then your system should boot, but slowly.
UNetbootin makes the whole process very much quicker, though, at least in theory.
